It begins with a dichotomous identification key to about genera of zygomycetes, ascomycetes and anamorphic fungi commonly isolated from soil. Brief descriptions are provided for each species, and a mixture of line drawings, photomicrographs or scanning electron micrographs illustrate their micromorphology.
The reproduction of illustrations is a vast improvement over the reprint, but there are still scanning artifacts in some half tones. There is a scattering of new line drawings and photographs, but most illustrations are the same as in the first edition. The capsule biological reviews that accompany each species extend the utility of this book far beyond that of a general taxonomic treatise.
These reviews have not been updated from the first edition. Despite the possibility that some sources of the original data may have been based on misidentifications, these sections present an overview of a tremendous amount of information that predates computerized literature searches.
An extra references are added to the original bibliography in this edition, but these are exclusively taxonomic. The most dramatic changes reflect taxonomic changes of the past few decades; readers accustomed to the first edition will have a steep learning curve with the new one.
Almost all of these genera have been revised extensively, usually with molecular phylogenetics as part of the story. With such a vast scope, only one sample of the taxonomic changes will be noted here. An oddity of fungal taxonomy is the use of different scientific names for sexual and asexual fungi, resulting in two separate but overlapping classification systems.
Although the sexual state taxonomy has been considered definitive, most soil fungi are isolated and referred to as asexual forms, and those names dominate the literature. In the first edition, Fusarium species were covered under that generic name, but also under two genera named for sexual forms. Here, all Fusarium species are treated in one chapter, much easier for the user who rarely sees a sexual stage. This change in philosophy is adopted with some exceptions throughout the book.
There are competing identification manuals for soil fungi, but they lack taxonomic authority and the deep experience conveyed by the Compendium.
Anyone working in soil microbiology should have at least one copy of this book in his or her laboratory, and at this price should be able to afford it. For most species included in the book DNA sequences are now available in public databases, and many ecologists will use them for their identification key.
