One might think the Estimated Maximum Loss EML , or the largest potential loss of a risk, is the best way to determine the limit of liability. The lack of a standard methodology of EML calculation means the results swing widely, depending on the modeling software as well as the people inputting the data. A VCE occurs when the leakage of a large volume of flammable gas or vapor mixes with air and finds its ignition source in a confined or congested area.
Generally, the VCE EML calculation process involves modeling different explosion scenarios with defined parameters and assumptions, such as hold-up and released flammable gas or liquid, temperature, pressure, release period, congestion, etc.
But VCE is a deflagration, not a detonation. Request quote. Explosions modelling software With the 3D Explosions extension we bring advanced modelling capabilities to Phast, the world-leading process hazard analysis software. Vapour cloud explosions Vapour cloud explosions VCEs are the result of an ignition of a cloud of flammable vapour, gas or mist.
The explosion modelling software extension supports compliance with guidelines on the design and location of occupied buildings subject to explosion hazards, including, for example, API RP and API RP and Facility siting considerations in general More detailed consideration of explosions consequences in comparison to the standard version of Phast Process industry hazard analysis Experience has shown that the damage potential to persons, equipment and buildings associated with explosions can be significant.
With Phast explosions modelling software you can: Explicitly consider the interaction of the flammable cloud and identified regions of congestion in 3D.
This can be done using either the Multi-Energy or Baker Strehlow Tang models Elevated clouds and regions of confinement can be assessed as well as separation distances between congested regions Generate blast parameters for overpressure and impulse side-on, reflected or dynamic and display as contours or in tabular reports Determine design accidental loads on key equipment and structure. Develop combined hazard contours in the explosion modelling software for a range scenarios and hazard types explosions, fires, toxics and flammable clouds Consider directional aspects that can influence the explosion modelling outcome e.
Phast helped SCG modelling consequence analysis with credible and reasonable results. The 'help' tab and 'technical document' contain excellent knowledge for our understanding in methodology and output - we could describe the results to team with confidence and trustfulness.
So how consistent could the results be? In one of the five different loss scenarios, the maximum property damages were estimated at SEK 6, million and SEK 2, million, respectively. While the point of an EML is to estimate the worst-case scenario, it is by no means a guarantee, and modeled results always need to be supplemented by further judgment.
In Gen Re, we have a team of experienced underwriters dedicated to the Oil and Gas industry. As a non-proportional underwriter who shares in the risk with you, we can help remove the unexpected volatility arising from getting the EML wrong.
