If you get one with the original belts you will need to replace it because the original has turned into a tar like substance. Worse yet if someone tries to run it the tar like belt could throw tar all over the inside.
Another issue is tape slack in one direction or both. Usual cause is incorrect belt. There is also an extra washer that is suppose to be on the mount for the Capstan motor. If it's not in the correct place you will hear all sorts of noise inside the recorder. One last issue is that the sensor that detects end of tape and cause tape travel too reverse only works in forward play.
At the end of reverse play the machine relies on the counter to hit to trigger tape direction switch. Weak forward and reverse motors can also be a problem. I really do like this tape recorder once you iron out the bugs. The audio electronics seems too be built like a tank.
If you use a good quality low noise tape the output quality could just blow you away. Great deck but watch that belt if you buy one. Reviewed Feb 17th, by guest. I own a number of open reel decks, all properly aligned and calibrated. That said, the Teac deck is very complex by comparison and required more effort to restore. The deck is convenient with it's auto reverse capability and can record superb analogue tapes with about 90 dB of signal to noise ratio because of it's DBX 1 capability.
The build quality is good but not to the standard of the US Crown or Revox decks. Still highly recommended. Agreed, sounds much better than the fully sorted 2 track high speed Revox B77, which will be up for sale soon. I much prefer the sound and convenience of the XR. Was there more than one model of this deck? Mine is black and the head placement doesn't seem to match the service manual.
The record and play heads appear to be swapped. EDIT: Just looked at the owner's manual - the picture of the heads in that one match my unit, but the service manual does not. When I press the play button in the forward and reverse direction, it attempts to play but no movement of the reels. The rewind and fast forward works fine, I am not sure if my settings are correct when trying to play the reel.
Any suggestions. Check the tension arm. It may need to be replaced.. OR, you may have an issue with one of the motors, which may be slightly out of alignment.
Does it work if you remove the reel cap? Make sure the transport mechanism contacts "CAPSTAN" first and then go from there and troubleshoot "free" movement of all mechanical portion of the transport system. Sometimes, the position of the tension arm on the right side that also measures elapse time on tape, affects play forward and reverse operation. Frequently the solenoid that presses the pinch rollers against the capstans cannot overcome resistance from old lube on the mechanism. You can verify that the pinch rollers have lifted by exercising the manual tape lifter.
If that should work, some oil on the mechanism could permanently correct the problem. Thanks for all that you do. How do you support yourself. I'm willing to donate to insure your continued existence. Is the tape tracking off to the sides of the heads when placed into play mode. Try flipping over the pinch rollers to see if the fault changes, old rollers that are out of shape can cause mistracking.
